Leave early, beat Colombo
Aim to clear the Colombo ring road before 7am. From there the expressway carries you south quickly before the climb begins.
Stop 1 — Kitulgala or Kandy
Take the Kitulgala road for river scenery and rafting, or route via Kandy for the Temple of the Tooth and a lakeside lunch.
Stop 2 — Tea country
Between Nuwara Eliya and Haputale the road threads through estates at 1,800m. Ramboda Falls, a factory tour and the Gregory Lake viewpoint fit comfortably into the day.
Arrive for golden hour in Ella
Reach Ella by late afternoon and you can still walk to Nine Arches Bridge for sunset, or save Little Adam's Peak for the next morning.
